The client was a US-based non-profit organisation that investigates and reports on human rights abuses around the world.
As generative AI continues to develop and its uptake increases, organisations across different industries are experimenting with different use cases for the technology. In doing so, it is important for organisations to put in place an appropriate AI governance framework to ensure that the development and deployment of AI is done in a responsible and compliant manner.
AWO was asked to assist non-profit with developing a comprehensive AI governance framework that the organisation can implement for the development and deployment of AI systems for its work.
- Scoping call. We started off with a call with client to get an initial understanding of the AI use cases, the policies currently in place and what they would like the governance framework to cover.
- Feedback on first draft of guidance document. Based on the scoping call and documentation provided by the client, we produced the first draft of a guidance document detailing the current AI use cases at the non-profit, the applicable laws to those use cases (including the EU AI Act and GDPR) and the steps for implementing the proposed governance framework.
- Completion of final draft and final call. We integrated the feedback from the client to produce a final draft of the guidance document and also took a final call with the client to answer questions and provide advice on the implementation of the proposed governance framework.
Many organisations are in the early stages of developing and implementing appropriate governance frameworks for AI. While there are many standards and approaches that could be adopted in this regard, we recommend that organisations take a bespoke approach wherever possible that fits the given context. This is why we took the time with the non-profit to understand their particular use cases and strategy regarding AI so that we could produce guidance and advice most suitable for the client.
Our biggest takeaway from this work is that it is critical for AI governance frameworks to be aligned with the organisation’s relationship with AI. These frameworks, and the measures taken to implement them, should be aligned to organisational objectives and values as well as how people are using AI in their day-to-day work, helping to empower organisations to leverage these tools the right way.
